Poo Bags – All dog lovers use them, but which ones are best, to help reduce plastic and help the environment?
There is a problem with many of the normal dog waste bags that are on the market, many of these have issues that make them a poor eco-friendly choice. Many waste bags come with the tag of being “biodegradable” however this is not always as it seems and can at times be misleading. These "biodegradable" waste bags can take many years to degrade no matter where they end up.
Despite many waste bags having eco-friendly claims, biodegradable dog poop bags often end up in landfill due to insufficient composting infrastructure or confusion among pet owners. In landfill, biodegradable bags break down anaerobically, releasing methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Methane significantly contributes to global warming, negating the purported environmental benefits of these bags.
Most waste bags sold in the UK are OXO-degradable, (refered to oxo- degradable or oxo bio-degradable) these are made from a PE type of plastic which means they do NOT naturally biodegrade.
These types of OXO-degradable bags are made with ordinary plastic to which chemical additives D2W or EPI are added, this then makes it impossible for the bags to breakdown to a natural molecular level in short period of time meaning we are then left with the remaining microplastics.
Terminology of the Poo Bag world
- Biodegradable: This may sound eco-friendly, but they ultimately contribute to environmental harm by persisting as microplastic particles, posing long term ecological threats. This can be toxic to the environment and can easily contaminate things they come in to contact with.
- Recycled: While a step in the right direction for reducing waste, they do remain environmentally problematic as they ultimately breakdown into forever lasing microplastics particle.
- Oxo - Degradable: These are the ones we need to avoid as they will not breakdown due to their chemcial addatives.
Remember Biodegradable and recycled doesn’t mean plastic free or ecofriendly!
So, what we are looking for in our waste bags so we can be as green and as environmentally friendly as we can, we all need a certified compostable and biodegradable bag.Compostable and biodegradable means these bags are made from a cornstarch blend, these are environmentally superior waste bags as they naturally decompose without leaving any harmful microplastics behind.
